“It didn’t have much character,” says Hector, who wanted a cedar wood pergola, treated yearly with linseed oil, to break up the summer sun and add more character to the patio. The family also modernized the archways, changing the structure of the outdoor patio, in addition to adding more square footage. The construction to the area also added versatility for outdoor events, adding elements beneficial in the winter and summer months. Nash designed and implemented the changes to the patio using unique elements that catered to the needs of the Salazar family.
The patio includes two water features, with live plants and fish, both complete with waterfalls that add a certain charm to the space. One waterfall, located on the lower level of the patio, includes small viewing windows for the plant and animal life living there. Another water feature present in the backyard is the hot tub, overlooking the city of El Paso. A recessed pool beneath the hot tub gives the appearance of an edgeless pool of water. In the winter, Hector says it is nice to enjoy the hot tub and the view in the evenings, with the steam rising from the tub.
Another winter-friendly feature on the Salazar patio is the stone fireplace that acts as the focal point for the entire seating area, and adds to the view of the city in the background. “We really wanted to take advantage of the views this house offered us,” Hector says.
Even the kids have a major part of the patio to themselves, with a large jungle gym, covered with a pergola and a fogging system to keep them cool during the summer months. The fogging system is continued throughout the patio and is a popular feature for the family, who enjoys entertaining year-round.
A special feature to the backyard, a practice putting green, lies just beyond the back fence, using a space often neglected by surrounding neighbors. The house is located near the Coronado Country Club, which makes this feature a one-of-a-kind addition.
Although some of the areas on the patio are not yet complete, Hector and Susanne Salazar are excited to have an oasis to enjoy in every season, and a place for their kids to enjoy as well.
