Hardware Specialties

The battle is on between design and function. Brass doorknobs, satin nickel cabinet knobs, embossed towel racks – it’s all about the hardware. For decades knobs, locks, latches, handles and hinges have quietly surrounded us. We want our hardware to work well, withstand a lot and, these days, look spectacular through it all. We demand choices!

At Hardware Specialties & Glass Co., Inc., in El Paso, design and function are everywhere, but narrowing down your favorites among the many different types of hardware the company carries is the hard part.

“There are so many hardware choices on the market today,” Jeff Paxton, vice-president of the store, says as he looks around his showroom. It is well-stocked with brilliant colored knobs, pewter door handles and stainless steel faucets – and that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. “We like to have a good variety so we can give customers as many options as we can.”

Home hardware ranges from cabinet handles, bathroom racks, hooks, switch plates, address numbers, doorbell plates and doorknockers, among many other things. From southwestern styles to elegant gold plates, there is something for everyone.

“Hardware shows a person’s personal taste and style,” says Jeff, emphasizing that personal style is key to a happy client, but quality is even more important – something hardware distributors should always take into account when stocking hardware. “To some people, a door lock is just a door lock, but when you sell the product, you know how important the quality is.”

As far as door locks go, safety becomes a big issue along with design and function. Deciding whether or not to use a deadbolt-type lock on a door is something Hardware Specialties can help you with. Picking the design, however, is up to you and your imagination.

Hardware Specialties carries products such as Baldwin, Amerock, Emtek and Belwith-Keeler – top of the line products you won’t always find in nationwide home improvement stores.

Jeff runs the family business with his father, Jack Paxton. Hardware Specialties has been bringing that wide range of hardware to the area for over 40 years, but it wasn’t until Jack bought the business in the early 80s that the company began to have a few added Paxton perks -- a strong family touch, one-on-one customer service and employee loyalty.

Jack and Jeff share their love for quality hardware with 10 other employees, more than half who have been with the company for more than 10 years. Four of those have been with the company for more than 20 years.

“We take care of our employees, and they take care of our customers,” Jack says. “And we all focus on quality hardware.”
