The unique Moroccan-style tiles that accent the cook top area were spotted in a magazine. Leah searched until she found them in Los Angeles. “I loved them, because of the blue slate and old weathered look they gave the room. I carried the theme of the tile out onto the patio and faced the fireplace with them also,” Leah noted. As Leah moved further into the color palette she chose a soft red hue for the Venetian plastered hood with softer hues for the surrounding walls.
For cabinetry they chose a soft, medium-toned maple wood to offset the rich Venetian plastered walls, which draw the eye. “We wanted to keep the room light, so we went with a lighter wood,” Ralph said. Accents of hand carved wood extend to tops of the perfectly framed windows that look out over the backyard.
In the center of this wonderful room is a large granite-topped island detailed like furniture, with a beautifully hand carved panel on the entry side of the kitchen. The ruby red granite on the island accents the old brick used in the game room, adding seamless design as guests move from one room to the other.
The Salases selected Sub Zero and Wolf stainless steel appliances that can accommodate wear and tear from their active family of six. The tiled floor speaks the same language with a contemporary Mexican tile in neutral shades, which is stunning and easy to care for. “We definitely wanted this addition to be “family friendly” with an even and clean look to it,” notes Ralph. With all the elements combined, the Salas family has created a kitchen where they can connect with each other in casual comfort and beauty.
