Touchless Faucets

We’ve seen them in airport restrooms for years... and then restaurant bathrooms. Your kids have played games with them in sports stadiums or in their school, and I’m sure you’ve caught yourself testing the limits of the on/off function when you find yourself alone in the lavatory. Now automatic faucets are coming to a home near you — perhaps your own.

There are many benefits to having an automatic faucet. Aside from being eternally entertaining and a source of “oohs” and “aahs”, these faucets were created to prevent the spread of bacteria and to conserve water. Avoiding bacterial cross contamination from the bathroom, or kitchen, to other areas is ever important, especially for those with weaker immune systems, such as children, the elderly, or the infirm. Also, the need to conserve water will only grow in importance as our community grows in size. The average 2.63-person household in New Mexico uses about 121 gallons a day for toilets, showerheads, and faucets. Multiply 121 gallons by the estimated 677,971 households in New Mexico alone, and that equals 82,034,491 gallons of water flushed, poured, or left running in one day.

Many touchless faucets use infrared sensors to detect movement. These sensors are typically placed at the base of the unit or near the spout. You move your hands near the sensor, and the water flows. They are usually battery powered, but they can be AC powered using an adaptor as well. The newest in power sources for the faucets is solar power; these faucets run on natural and artificial light. All of these fixtures are designed to last and remain beautiful over the years through many uses, and they are commonly made of brass and chrome. Depending on the model, the temperature is controlled either by a manually adjusted mixing valve or by automatic sensors. When researching automatic faucets for your home, look into how the temperature is controlled, make sure it will fit your sink and familiarize yourself with what will be needed to power the unit.

Automatic faucets come in varying shapes, styles, and finishes. Kohler offers a graceful “gooseneck spout” that sweeps over your sink, as well as other sleek models. The Delta eFlow® Collection is alive with color, and has six interchangeable temperature control handles that come in Vreeland Red, Orange Spice, Colorado Mist, Astro Green, Zen Purple, or Pacific Blue. The available matching tub and shower handles will complete the color palette of your bathroom.
