Local artist Laurel Weathersbee provided original artwork for the tour of gardens and the Las Cruces Master Gardeners from the Doña Ana County Cooperative Extension Office were on hand in the gardens to answer questions.
This year’s benefactors were Dolores DeMers, RE/MAX Classic Realty, Gonzales Nursery, Guzman’s Garden Centers and The Home Depot. Sponsors were Enchanted Gardens, Green Thumb, The Greenhouse, Inc., Mathers Realty, Mesilla Valley Iris Society, Solo Ranch Fly-In Community and Steinborn GMAC Real Estate.
The proceeds of the tour were donated to gardening related beautification and educational projects in the community.
In El Paso, great gardens were seen at five of the area’s top private gardens during the Garden Conservancy’s 2007 Open Days program May 5th and 6th. One garden highlighted is a nationally registered Backyard Habitat. Other gardens showed off mulberry, live oak, pecan and sycamore trees; orchards of pears, pomegranates, apples and plums. Many gardens highlighted soothing waterfalls, and one incorporated a hidden garden room.
The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program is available throughout the nation to provide open invitations to explore the talents of gardeners and the incredible designs throughout their gardens. Volunteers coast to coast coordinate schedules and open gardens to the public through the program, allowing garden lovers to see gardens otherwise not open to the public.
